New Report! Socioeconomic Impacts of Red Tides & Adaptation Strategies in Peru
Workshops Addressing Harmful Algal Blooms in Peru's Coastal Communities

During a series of workshops in late 2022, fishers, mariculturists, public officials, and scientists from the Humboldt-Tipping project came together to map the socioeconomic impacts of Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs) in Peru and collaboratively identify adaptation pathways. Harmful Algal Blooms occur when microscopic algae grow out of control and generate negative impacts on humans and ecosystems. Red Tides are predicted to increase in frequency due to global climate change and human influences worldwide.

The report presents the results of this participatory research, identifying primary impacts, adaptation strategies, and recommendations to enhance the management of HABs in Peru. Read the Spanish report here:
